What this website does and does not do

This site consists of statically generated text pages. There is no login, no comment function and no contact form. All images are held on the same server as the texts. It embeds no fonts, maps, videos or advertising networks and no social buttons.

For audience measurement, however, we use Google Analytics. This sets cookies and loads program code from a Google server. Details are given below under "Audience measurement with Google Analytics".

Server log files

When a page is retrieved, your browser transmits — as with every request on the internet — technical information to the server. The operator of the server records this in log files:

  • the IP address of the requesting device
  • the date and time of the retrieval
  • the address retrieved and the volume of data transferred
  • the message stating whether the retrieval was successful
  • the browser and operating system identification transmitted by your browser

This information is required in order to deliver the site, to safeguard its stability and to detect attacks. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest lies in the technically faultless operation of the site. This information is not combined with other data, and no attempt is made to draw conclusions about a person from it.

Hosting

This website is served by Vercel Inc., United States of America. Vercel processes the log data named above on our behalf as a processor under Article 28 GDPR; a corresponding agreement is in place.

Because the provider is established in the United States, data may be transferred to a third country in the process. Vercel is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and has declared to the U.S. Department of Commerce that it adheres to its principles; in addition, the Standard Contractual Clauses of the European Commission apply.

The log files are deleted after one week.

Audience measurement with Google Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics 4, a service provided by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. It helps us understand which pages are read and by which routes readers arrive here.

When a page is opened, program code is loaded from a Google server. Google sets cookies on your device and processes, among other things, the addresses opened, the time and duration of the visit, the referring page, details of your browser and operating system, an approximate location and your shortened IP address. Google also uses this information for its own purposes.

The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest lies in evaluating the reach of this site. Data may be transferred to Google LLC in the United States. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; the Standard Contractual Clauses of the European Commission apply in addition.

You may object to this measurement at any time (Article 21 GDPR). You can prevent it effectively by installing the browser add-on offered by Google to deactivate Google Analytics, or by blocking cookies for this site in your browser.

Links to external sites

This site links in several places to external websites, for example to specialist journals and to Wikimedia Commons. As soon as you follow such a link, the privacy policy of the site called up applies. We have no influence on how that site handles your data. A request is made only when you click the link — no content from there is loaded in the background.

Your rights

You have the following rights vis-à-vis the controller: access to the data processed concerning you (Article 15 GDPR), rectification of inaccurate data (Article 16), erasure (Article 17), restriction of processing (Article 18), data portability (Article 20) and objection to processing based on a legitimate interest (Article 21).

Irrespective of this, you may lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Article 77 GDPR). The competent authority is the one at the place of your habitual residence, your place of work or the place of the alleged infringement.

Changes

If the structure of this site changes — for example through new functions — this policy will be adapted accordingly.
